On Wednesday the 2nd October, we’re showing GHOST IN THE SHELL at 19:30.
YEAR: 1995 | DIR.: Mamoru Oshii | JAPAN | JAPANESE W/ ENG SUBS | 15
It found a voice… now it needs a body.
The year is 2029 - the rise of cybernetics brings about new vulnerability in the form of brain hacking. Following the ever-increasing number of crimes committed by the hacker known as ‘The Puppetmaster,’ Section 9 - a group of cybernetically enhanced cops - are called in to investigate. One of the most famous and influential anime features ever made (and famously one of the principal inspirations for The Matrix), Ghost in the Shell is a stunning feat of modern animation. A thoughtful, complex treat for anime fans, as well as a perfect introduction for viewers new to the medium.
To kickstart the all-new (and sure-to-shock) VIDEO NASTIES SEASON, on Friday the 4th October we’re showing RAW at 19:30.
YEAR: 2016 | DIR.: Julia Ducournau | BELGIUM, FRANCE, USA | FRENCH W/ ENG SUBS | 18
What are you hungry for?
Justine (Garance Marillier) comes from a family of vegetarians. At the age of sixteen, she is already preparing for her first year at vet school. But upon her arrival, she’s subject to a series of brutal hazing rituals, and is forced to eat raw meat for the first time. Something awakens inside Justine, and she begins to wonder if there is any point in denying her new found craving for raw flesh. The debut feature by Julia Ducournau (Titane), Raw is a beautifully realised, symbolically rich, and disturbingly erotic meditation on primal hungers of all kinds - and one of the best horror films in recent memory.
And lastly, on Saturday the 5th October we’re showing I SAW THE TV GLOW at 19:30.
YEAR: 2024 | DIR.: Jane Schoenbrun | USA | ENGLISH | 15
Look a little closer.
Teenager Owen (Justice Smith) is living an aimless life in the suburbs when his classmate Maddy (Brigette Lundy-Paine) introduces him to a mysterious late-night TV show which offers a vision of a supernatural world beneath their own. In the pale glow of the television, Owen’s view of reality begins to crack. Jane Schoenbrun's astonishing second feature manages to retain the seductive fear of their micro-budget debut We’re All Going to the Worlds’ Fair, and further establishes the director as a rising talent. With a distinct visual aesthetic and a haunting atmosphere, this is a film you can’t forget.
Such an exciting selection to start the Autumn semester with. As always: tickets can be bought online (on the SU website) or on the door for £3! With the cheapest cinema tickets in the city, why not?
