WEDNESDAY 14TH MAY
Gaslight
YEAR: 1944
DIR: George Cukor
COUNTRY: America
“The strange drama of a captive sweetheart!”
Beautiful and trusting, Paula Anton (Ingrid Bergman) is slowly tormented by mysterious happenings in her luxurious Victorian home. The suspect is her devoted husband. But viewing the world through the dim glow of the gaslight, it is difficult to tell what is real and what is imagined. If you've ever used the word ‘gaslighting,’ you owe it to this classic film noir - an essential text on control within a relationship.
FRIDAY 16TH MAY
Breathless
YEAR: 1960
DIR: Jean-Luc Godard
COUNTRY: France
“Wild! Violent! Outspoken and honest!“
A small-time thief, Michel (Jean-Paul Belmondo), steals a car and impulsively murder a motorcycle policeman. Wanted by the authorities, he flees to Paris, where he attempts to convince his on-off American girlfriend, Patricia (Jean Seberg), to run away to Italy with him. A cornerstone of the French New Wave, Breathless rewrote the rules of cinema - and more than 50 years after its arrival, Jean-Luc Godard's paradigm-shifting classic remains every bit as vital. With its bold visual style, naturalistic dialogue, and iconic performances from stars Belmondo and Seberg, this is an ‘Important,’ film with a capital ‘i’.
SATURDAY 17TH MAY
Mulholland Drive
YEAR: 2001
DIR: David Lynch
COUNTRY: America
“An actress longing to be a star. A woman searching for herself. Both worlds will collide... on Mulholland Drive”
A typically surreal neo-noir from David Lynch, Mulholland Drive tells the story of aspiring actress Betty Elms (Naomi Watts), who has just arrived in Los Angeles. Betty meets and befriends theenigmatic Rita (Laura Harring), who is recovering from a car accident. Whilst the two work together to help Rita recover her identity, filmmaker Adam Kesher (Justin Theroux) runs into ominous trouble while casting his latest project. Simultaneously seductive and frightening, this startling vision of Los Angeles’s dream factory is one of the true masterpieces of the new millennium, a tale of love, jealousy, and revenge like no other.
